Disparities & Health Equity Workgroup

The Disparities and Health Equity Work Group is a new statewide work group convened and supported by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control (MCCPCP) program, part of the Community Health and Prevention Bureau of the Department of Public Health.  Health disparities is one of several cross-cutting themes of MCCPCP’s new 2012 – 2016 cancer plan out this spring, and we advise the Department address the many critical strategies put forth in the new state cancer plan.

For Year 2 of the Disparities/Health Equity Work Group, the primary focus will be:

  1. Building membership and developing workgroup goals and guidelines
  2. Prostate Cancer (with a specific focus on issues facing Black, Non-Hispanic men)
  3. Engaging Diverse Communities across the state in the roll-out and implementation of the new state cancer plan

The new group meets monthly and right now we are carefully and deliberately building our membership to be as inclusive and representative of diverse populations as possible—taking special care to get people at the table from groups that are usually overlooked.  This is a balancing act, as we also want to keep the group to a manageable size. We are dedicated to making sure meetings are as accessible as possible, and are experimenting with video conferencing technology to enable groups at two locations (or potentially more in the future) to meet at the same time, communicating via video stream.

This new group provides a unique opportunity to collaboratively address Health Disparities and Health Equity across Massachusetts—particularly around cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship.
